Date Night Outfits: What I Actually Wear in OC

Getting dressed for a date night in Orange County is its own specific challenge. You need to look good enough that your date notices you made an effort, casual enough that you don't look like you're trying too hard, warm enough for the outdoor patio you'll inevitably end up on, and practical enough that you can walk from the parking structure to the restaurant without face-planting in your heels. It's a four-variable equation and I've spent fifteen years solving it through trial and error. Mostly error.

Tier 1: Casual Date (Laguna Beach, Costa Mesa)

The "we're getting tacos and maybe walking on the beach after" date requires zero heels and maximum confidence. My go-to is the AGOLDE jeans from my capsule wardrobe, a silk cami (Vince, $195, in champagne), and my AllSaints moto jacket draped over my shoulders because it's always colder near the water than you think it's going to be.

Shoes: Golden Goose sneakers. $530. I know. Trust me, I KNOW. But I've had them for three years, they get better with age, and they're the one sneaker I own that looks intentional with a silk top. If that price makes you nauseous — completely valid — the Veja Esplar ($140) works almost as well.

Hair: down, air-dried with a little Oribe Wave Spray ($44). Makeup: the daily routine plus a swipe of Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk lipstick ($34). Total prep time beyond my normal routine: eight minutes.

Tier 2: Nice Dinner (Newport Beach, Dana Point)

Bandera, Fig & Olive, Nobu — these restaurants have a vibe that falls between "you should probably change out of your athleisure" and "nobody's wearing a cocktail dress." The sweet spot is elevated casual. My Reformation Gavin dress in black (midi, slightly fitted) with Stuart Weitzman block heels and the Jenni Kayne cardigan tucked into my bag in case the AC is aggressive.

The secret weapon for this tier is earrings. My Jenny Bird gold hoops transform the entire outfit from "nice dress" to "she planned this." I put them on in the car. My date has never noticed that I accessorize at red lights. Or if he has, he's chosen not to mention it.

Alternative: wide-leg trousers (Cos, $89) with the white button-down from my capsule, tucked, with a belt. This looks pulled-together without trying too hard. Add the moto jacket and you've got something that works from the restaurant to drinks afterward without needing to go home and change.

Tier 3: Special Occasion (Galas, Premieres, Holidays)

This is where Alexis Couture earns its place. I designed the line specifically for these moments — the charity galas, the anniversary dinners, the New Year's Eve parties where you want to feel extraordinary without wearing something so tight you can't eat the appetizers.

The red carpet piece covers the full production for major events. For regular special occasions, my approach is simpler: one statement piece and everything else quiet. A dramatic dress with subtle jewelry. Or a simple dress with bold earrings and a killer shoe. Never compete with yourself. Pick your star and let it shine.

The one rule I never break: I can eat in this outfit. If the dress requires me to not breathe during dinner, it's the wrong dress. Food is part of the date. Sometimes it's the best part. I refuse to sacrifice a good meal for a good photo.

The Confidence Factor

I've shown up to dates in outfits that cost $3,000 and I've shown up in jeans and a tank top. The dates where I felt best were never about the clothes — they were about how the clothes made me feel. If I'm tugging at a hemline all night, I'm not present. If I'm worried about a stain, I'm distracted. The best date night outfit is one you put on and immediately forget about because you feel so comfortable in it that your brain can focus on the actual date.

That said, wear something that makes you feel like the best version of yourself. Not the Instagram version. Not the RHOC version. The real version. The one who laughs too loud and orders dessert and has opinions about the wine list. She's the most attractive person at the table. What she's wearing is secondary.
